Apple confirmed a glitch that prevents some users from updating their Mac OS X Leopard machines using the built-in software update mechanism.

According to a tech note posted on Apple’s Support site, the update process may stop responding while "Configuring installation" is visible in the update window. The problem happens when software update attempts to install an update that has been partially downloaded.

To get around this problem Apple suggested users first go to /Library/Updates and move the contents of that folder to the trash. You can then use software update to re-download and install the update.

If you don’t want to try the automatic update again you can visit Apple’s Support site and download the update manually.

Nokia to launch ‘live tools’ for farmers, students

Nokia India is set to shortly launch subscription-based mobile phone services ‘live tools’ for the farming community and students.

The Managing Director, Mobile Phones, Nokia India, D. Shiva Kumar, said that these services, to be launched later this month, will be offered with a monthly subscription fee of Rs 60 and 30 per user.

In the case of farmers, they can access information on agriculture, commodity prices and weather and related issues over their mobile phone. This service will be offered in partnership with Reuters, he told on the sidelines of a conference at the Indian School of Business.

Besides the innovative Agricultural information offered, the service provides users with Educational support in the form of English lessons. Students can now improve their English language, by taking quizzes on English words and phrases, exams, but they can also attend prep-exams lessons for higher education and career guidance tips. RIM To Oppose Certicom's Applications

Research In Motion Limited ("RIM") announced today that it has been advised that Certicom Corp. ("Certicom") intends to apply to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Securities Commission for an injunction and cease trade order, respectively, preventing RIM from acquiring Certicom shares under RIM's offer, dated December 10, 2008, for all of Certicom's shares at a price of CDN$1.50 per share. While this course of conduct is consistent with Certicom's past conduct in rebuffing RIM's overtures to conclude a negotiated transaction with Certicom, RIM is disappointed that Certicom's directors are again attempting to keep the decision as to whether to accept RIM's offer out of Certicom shareholders' hands.

RIM understands that the basis of the injunction and cease trade applications is Certicom's allegation that RIM used confidential information contrary to the terms of agreements entered into between RIM and Certicom, and an alleged related failure by RIM to make proper disclosure in its offer to purchase and circular sent to Certicom's shareholders. RIM intends to vigorously oppose Certicom's allegations.

Certicom has an obligation under securities laws to publicly disclose all material information on a continuous basis. If the Certicom directors are of the view that there is any other material information that has not been disclosed to Certicom's shareholders, the Certicom directors should disclose such information in their directors' circular, which is to be mailed to Certicom shareholders by December 29, 2008.

Espoo, Finland - Mail on Ovi, the free email account from Nokia, is now 'live' and can be set up directly on Nokia phones without requiring a PC to get started. People who use Nokia Series 40 devices can create their own email address directly on their mobile phones. The Ovi email account gives a person all the features and functionalities of a typical PC-based email account. During the Beta period, consumers will be able to choose from 12 languages based on the settings of their device, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Bengali, Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia.

The free virtualization solution from Sun, has just passed version 2.1.0. VirtualBox memorandum is the result of the acquisition of German publisher Innotek by Sun, and allows the user to operate on the same computer or server operating systems: a "host" physically installed, and "Guests" in the form of virtual machines. VirtualBox runs Solaris OS, OpenSolaris, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

On the menu this version 2.1.0, the main novelty will probably care, experimental, 64-bit systems virtualized guests on 32-bit systems, and management, is still experimental, the OpenGL 3D.

Micron and Sun co-develop Flash Memory

Micron Technology has announced it has worked with Sun Microsystems to develop a new single-level cell (SLC) enterprise NAND technology that extends the lifespan of flash-based storage for enterprise applications. The result of the collaboration has yielded production devices capable of achieving one million write cycles.

Micron claims that its SLC NAND flash devices will sustain one million write cycles, ten times more compared to typical SLC NAND flash’s one hundred thousand write cycles. The number of write cycles for MLC NAND is unclear, but it may also go up ten times from 10 thousand times per bit.

Micron is now sampling its Enterprise NAND in densities up to 32Gb/s. Volume production is expected in the first quarter of 2009. Micron also plans to introduce both SLC and multi-level cell (MLC) enterprise versions on its industry-leading 34nm NAND process early next year.

The Q3 2008 market share report authored by respected telecoms market research firm ‘Broadbandtrends’ found Huawei delivered more than 6.6 million DSL lines in Q3 with a market share of 30.5%, retaining its global leadership in the DSL industry. The report confirmed Huawei’s leadership in the IP DSL and MSAP (Multi-Service Access Platform) segmented markets with 28.5% and 34.5% market share respectively.

Huawei’s copper access solutions now serve more than 180 million users worldwide and have been deployed in more than 90 countries on behalf of the industry’s top carriers including, among others, British Telecom, SingTel, Etisalat, Telecom Italia, Telmex, Telefónica, China Unicom and China Telecom.

"Despite the fierce competition of the global DSL market, Huawei consolidated its number one industry position with a very strong 30.5% market share,” said Teresa Mastrangelo, a Principal analyst for broadband infrastructure and services at Broadbandtrends. “This clearly indicates the extent to which Huawei's network access services have been widely adopted and trusted by operators across the globe."

Nvidia inks 2K Games deal

Nividia has announced that it has concluded a deal with 2K Games that will see its PhysX technology make its way to a selection of the Take-Two publisher's titles.

Borderlands, from Gearbox Software, will be one of the first titles to utilise the real-time physics effects middleware which is compatible with the PC, Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

"We are very impressed with the quality of the PhysX engine and we licensed it so our studios can use this solution early in development," said Jacob Hawley, technology director for 2K in a statement. "Developing games with an interactive story and immersive gameplay remains our number one priority, and aligning with technology leaders like Nvidia allows our teams to concentrate on making great games."

Intel launches 160 GB SSD 2.5 inches

Intel also announced an average time of operation (MTBF) of 1.2 million hours, an access time of 0085 ms, and a consumption of 150 mW over. World Bank bans Satyam for 8 years

The fourth-largest Indian IT company Satyam Computer Services has been banned by World Bank says a Fox News report. The report quotes
a senior World Bank official admitting that Satyam has been barred from all business at the bank for eight years.

The World Bank debarment has been meted out for "improper benefits to bank staff" and "lack of documentation on invoices," according to Fox News report.

World Bank information security chief Robert Van Pulley admitted to the ban during a recent meeting with the officials of Government Accountability Project (GAP), a whistleblower protection organisation in the US, as per the report. The bank has handed over the case to the US Justice Department and the Treasury Department.

“The World Bank had never complained or informed us... Satyam’s contract with the World Bank had come up for discussions in an earlier board meeting. We were told that as a matter of policy, the World Bank does not renew contracts with the same vendor for more than five years,” said TR Prasad, independent director on the Satyam Board. This was reconfirmed by another independent board member VS Raju. “Yes, we have banned Satyam from doing business with us,” the World Bank spokesperson, Sudip Mazumder, told ET from New Delhi.

HP urges LaserJet users to patch printers

update their devices' firmware or risk having remote attackers access
previously-printed documents.

In an advisory published Wednesday, HP said that users of certain
LaserJet, Color LaserJet and Digital Sender models are affected, and
urged them to immediately download and install firmware upgrades.

The devices include 10 different LaserJet models -- ranging from the
2410 to the 9050 -- two Color LaserJet models and the 9200C Digital
Sender, a sheet-fed document scanner.

According to San Antonio, Texas-based Digital Defense, Inc., the
security company that reported the problem to HP last October,
attackers can exploit a bug in the printers' Web-based control
interface to "read arbitrary system configuration files, cached
documents, etc."

Exploiting the vulnerability, the Digital Defense researchers said, is
"trivial" with common Web server "directory traversal" tactics. A
directory transversal attack is an HTTP-based exploit that lets
attackers access restricted directories, and execute commands outside
of the server's root directory.

Adrien de Beaupre, an analyst with the SANS Institute 's Internet
Storm Center (ISC), added his voice to the call for patching printers.
"The impact might not seem severe, as in the attacker can view the

Microsoft reveals 'My Phone' backup, sync

compatible with the service. In fact, it hedged: "Most phones that run
the Windows Mobile 6 operating system are compatible with My Phone
service," said the service's site.
Unlike MobileMe, My Phone looks to be a mobile-only service and only
affords 200 MB of remote storage. While that might be enough for
mobiles it probably wouldn't last 10 seconds on a PC. This begs the
question… Why? Why isn't Microsoft offering the whole enchilada? Maybe
we'll see a complete sync service offered under a different name but
Windows Mobile users hoping SkyBox would be Microsoft's answer to

alongside the European Commission to resolve the issue of monopoly of

The outfit's chairwoman and former CEO Mitchell Baker posted a blog
late on Friday in which she backed last month's preliminary findings
by the European Commission, which stated the tying of IE to Windows
"harms competition between web browsers, undermines product innovation
and ultimately reduces consumer choice."

Mitchell Baker said that in 90 years the U.S. Department of Justice
had ruled promoting illegal Internet Explorer 4, which still allowed

others to copy it," said Nicholas Negroponte, the chief of OLPC, who
predicts that within 3 years there will be 5 to 6 million machines a
month built by companies around the world.

At present contract manufacturers of electronics make OLPC XO machines
at the order of the organization, who then sells its low-cost laptops
to customers around the world. Mr. Negroponte wants actual hardware
makers to deliver the laptops, which reduces expenses and speeds up
time-to-market of the XOs. But considering the fact that OLPC XO is
very inexpensive, for hardware manufacturers it may not be an
interesting product to sell.

According to Mr. Negroponte, approximately 500 thousand children
worldwide already own OLPC XO-1 laptops.

Red Hat's MRG product is essentially a variant of the core Red Hat
Enterprise Linux stack. Instead of supporting bread and butter
functions for database and applications serving like Enterprise Linux,
MRG is sculpted to best carry out messaging, real-time and grid

The new 1.1 version of Enterprise MRG, originally due to ship by
December 31, is intended to replace the standard generic Linux kernel
with a real-time kernel based on the config_preempt_rt patch. That
patch that was jointly created by industry heavyweights Red Hat,
Novell, IBM, Silicon Graphics along with several smaller companies.

Breaking down the constituent parts of MRG, Red Hat officials note
that the R is relevant mostly to financial services companies and
defense contractors. The M is for those products, such as IBM's
Websphere MQ, that tend to pass a lot of messages between applications
and servers.

The G in MRG, until release 1.1, has been the missing link. Red Hat
officials said it has been the case largely because its programmers
have been working overtime to integrate the Condor grid into the

yet to support JBoss Enterprise stack.

logical one now that the company has switched its chief scientist.

A news-story by The Inquirer web-site claims that "Nvidia is
definitely working on an x86 chip and the firm is heavily recruiting
x86 engineers all over Silicon Valley". Back in 2006 the designer of
graphics processing units hired numerous specialists from Stexar
company, which also designed central processing units (CPUs) and
related technologies. Additionally, back in January '08 Nvidia
replaced its chief scientist David Kirk with William Dally, who is
known for his expertise in parallel computing technologies as well as
work on Cell/Larrabee-like chips.

not own a license on x86 instruction set originally developed by Intel

Microsoft testing new search service

Microsoft Corp is testing a new version of its online search service
internally under the name of Kumo.com, a spokesman for the software
company said on Monday.

The service is not yet available outside the company, but may
eventually form part of Microsoft's attempt to catch up with Internet
search leaders Google Inc and Yahoo Inc.

The new service was unveiled in an internal memo sent by the head of
research at the company's online services division on Monday. It did
not provide details about the new features.

"Kumo.com exists only inside the corporate network, and in order to
get enough feedback we will be redirecting internal live.com traffic
over to the test site in the coming days," said the memo from Satya
Nadella. "Kumo is the codename we have chosen for the internal test."

The memo was first made public on The Wall Street Journal's All Things
Digital blog.

Microsoft's Nadella reckons the company can put together a better
search engine than those currently available.

"We believe we can provide a better and more useful search experience
that helps you not just search but accomplish tasks," Nadella said in
the memo. "An explorer pane on the left side of results pages will
give you access to tools that help you with your tasks."

Telefonica, other telcos to launch Linux phones

Telefonica, joined wireless Linux foundation LiMo on Monday and
committed with five other major operators to sell phones using its
software this year.

Vodafone, Orange, Japan's NTT DoCoMo, Korea's SK Telecom, and the top
U.S. operator Verizon Wireless will also introduce phones using LiMo
software in 2009, the operators said in a joint statement ahead of
Mobile World Congress trade show next week in Barcelona.

"With a host of operators pledging to deliver handsets in 2009, we
expect LiMo to start making real tangible progress in 2010," said
Geoff Blaber, an analyst at research firm CCS Insight.

The market for software platforms on cellphones is led by Nokia's
Symbian operating system, but it has lost much ground over the last
year to Apple Inc and Research in Motion.

Computer operating system Linux has had little success in cellphones
thus far, but its role is increasing with the LiMo platform and Google
Inc using Linux to build its Android platform.

LiMo, a non-profit foundation, hopes to benefit from its focus on
giving greater say over software development to telecoms operators.

"Android is enjoying a huge amount of momentum at the moment in terms
of operator commitment and manufacturer support," said CCS' Blaber.

Windows 7 Build 7048 Rumor

While Microsoft is currently working on finalizing the Release
Candidate of Windows 7, a new version of its forthcoming operating
system, reserved for a community of accredited testers, appeared on
the download BitTorrent networks. Stamped in 7048, this build,
according to the names of the files made available, was compiled on 19
February. For now, only the 64 bit versions of the system are shared,
but the user at the origin of the leak that he will soon line the 32
bit versions. Officially, users have instant access to that beta 1 of
the system, which corresponds to the build 7000.

Quite a few are new to the program of this new version, which did not
prevent more than 16,000 people already start the download. Among
other things, we can see a new animation in the Start menu, new icons
for applications like Paint or Calculator, an overhaul of the taskbar

Bluetooth 2.2

According to the analysts over at IMS Research, the Bluetooth Special
Interest Group (SIG) is planning to release an updated Bluetooth in
mid 2009 with a promise to deliver transfer rates at higher speeds
than previous versions.

The idea of the new High Speed Bluetooth specification is to work with
WLAN or USB for improved data rates, and will be known as Bluetooth
10x and Bluetooth 100x, respectively.

For this to work, a mobile phone will need to be equipped with WLAN or
UWB radio. Hence Bluetooth 10x will be used first, since many of the
newer handsets already have WiFi capabilities built-in.
According to the SIG, Bluetooth 2.2 will enable wireless video
streaming, printing and other Wi-Fi related tasks. It will also meant
that faster speeds than that under v1.1 can be achieved.

Since we don't have any news of devices that will use this new
Bluetooth specification, we can't tell if it delivers its promises.
But once we have some compatible devices on hand, we'll try it out and
let you know.

We will be able to know more about Bluetooth 2.2 in mid 2009 when its
get launched by Bluetooth Special Interest Group. It is expected that
Bluetooth 10x devices will be released first followed by Bluetooth
100x, which if used along with Ultra Wide Broadband radio, may be able
to give 480mbps of data transfer speed.

For this to work, a mobile phone will need to be equipped with WLAN or
UWB radio. Hence Bluetooth 10x will be used first, since many of the
newer handsets already have WiFi capabilities built-in.The way I see
it, smartphones should stand first in the line for any upgrades,
although some of the modern WiFi-enabled feature phones could also see

The new iPod Touch 2G has a Bluetooth chip embedded in it but it has
not yet been activated. Once the final specifications are released, we
can expect Apple to release the update to enable Bluetooth 2.2
services.

I could run out and buy one to use as my living-room media center. So
on Tuesday, I did just that. (Yes, I left work and walked down to the
local Apple Store on day one, put down my credit card and left with a

it to my high-definition TV. It looks great, and the Apple Remote
works well with the built-in Front Row software to display media files

not only do I not want a keyboard and mouse floating around my living

Now, there are plenty of VNC-style screen-sharing apps on the App
Store, programs that let you see any Mac's screen and control it
remotely. But my TV is plenty big enough. I didn't need to duplicate
the Mac mini's screen on my iPhone, I just needed to control the
cursor and type in a few short items.

When Air Mouse Pro is running, the top half of the iPhone's screen is
a two-button trackpad, similar to the one you'll find on any Mac
laptop. The bottom half of the screen is for other input methods you
can toggle between--there's a full iPhone-style keyboard, a set of
media controller buttons, web-browser buttons, and a configurable set

On Wednesday, when asked if the company's diversity would shield it

like that." in a 'CNBC' television interview. But, he added, "from my
perspective it's hard to imagine why you'd see a decline." Schmidt
also said Google continues to look at acquisition opportunities, but
said he wasn't sure that prices were at their lows yet, or that the
economic slowdown has reached its bottom.

Schmidt was speaking from the Wall Street Journal Eco:nomics
conference in Santa Barbara, California, where he was scheduled to
make a presentation on Wednesday evening.
The appearance comes a day after Schmidt raised eyebrows at an

Google branches into expandable ads

Google is expanding its AdSense program--literally.

The Web search giant announced Wednesday in a blog post that it is
pitching advertisers on the use of expandable ad units, those adverts
that start out as banners or square ads and launch larger ads that
cover much of the Web site's content. However, Google says that unlike
the most annoying varietal, these expandable ads won't enlarge on
their own or with a simple mouse-over; users will have to click on the
smaller ad to get the larger ad.

Many users may find expandable ads annoying, but as Google points out,
the format could be valuable to both advertisers and customers when
used to show movie trailers, video game clips, or other images that
require greater emphasis on detail.

Google said that advertisers are automatically eligible to use the
expandable ads if they have added AdSense code to their site's source
code and enabled image ads. Google also noted that the program is
currently available only to specific advertisers in the U.S. that can
bid on specific ad placement.

Google also reminded advertisers that earnings will be based on
whether they use cost-per-click ads (CPC) versus cost-per-impression
(CPM) ads, promising that CPC expandable ads will generate more
earnings when a user visits the advertiser's landing page, and not
when a user simply clicks to expand the ad. Google has created an FAQ
page with more information for advertisers.

The expandable ads aren't likely to make a Google earnings skyrocket,
but because they require user interaction to expand, they also aren't
likely to create animosity from Web users.

Tata communications to work with Polish

Tata communications has signed an agreement with Poland-based mobile
phone operator Play to route the latter's entire international call
traffic, it was
announced on Wednesday.

Play will implement Tata's voice termination product VTS Prime
Solution to manage customer call quality. VTS Prime allows mobile
operators to pass on the burden of ensuring high quality international
calls to another telecom operator.

"We chose to work with Tata Communications because of their extensive
network backbone and experience, which was well positioned to fully
manage and support issues our company was facing as a start-up
operator," Play Carrier Relations director Piotr Kuriata said in a
joint statement.

Microsoft and TomTom Settle Patent Infringement Cases

Microsoft Corp. and TomTom N.V. today announced that they have settled the patent infringement cases brought by Microsoft before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington and the International Trade Commission (ITC) and by TomTom in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The cases have been settled through a patent agreement under which TomTom will pay Microsoft for coverage under the eight car navigation and file management systems patents in the Microsoft case. Also as part of the agreement, Microsoft receives coverage under the four patents included in the TomTom countersuit. The agreement, which has a five-year term, does not require any payment by Microsoft to TomTom. It covers both past and future U.S. sales of the relevant products. The specific financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The agreement includes patent coverage for Microsoft's three file management systems patents provided in a manner that is fully compliant with TomTom's obligations under the General Public License Version 2 (GPLv2). TomTom will remove from its products the functionality related to two file management system patents (the "FAT LFN patents"), which enables efficient naming, organizing, storing and accessing of file data. TomTom will remove this functionality within two years, and the agreement provides for coverage directly to TomTom's end customers under these patents during that time.

Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing, Microsoft Corporation, stated:

"We are pleased TomTom has chosen to resolve the litigation amicably by entering into a patent agreement. Our car navigation patents, which are at the heart of the enhanced auto experience enjoyed by millions of drivers today, have been licensed to many companies, including leaders in the car navigation sector. The file management system patents, which increase file management system efficiency and functionality, have also been licensed by many companies, including those that produce mixed source products.

We were able to work with TomTom to develop a patent agreement that addresses their needs and ours in a pragmatic way. When addressing IP infringement issues, there are two possible paths: securing patent coverage or not using the technology at issue. NVIDIA partners may launch GeForce

NVIDIA has been paying close attention to every move of its tough competitor AMD Radeon HD 4890. GeForce GTX275 won't be available until April 13th according to our previous information. And later AMD brought Radeon HD 4890 launch forward to April 2nd. Of course NVIDIA never wants to be left behind, so they also accelerates the release of GeForce GTX 275.

ATI actually preparing a new high-end graphics cards, the Radeon HD 4890, which NVIDIA is suspected to answer a direct competition, the GeForce GTX 275. Thus, qu'AMD advanced the date of commercialization of its new model in April 2, NVIDIA would in turn launch its graphics card on that date.

AMD nevertheless keeps a step ahead, the technical characteristics of the Radeon HD 4890 is precisely known, and many merchants already offering the pre-order. There is talk, however, the GeForce GTX 275 for a compromise between the GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 are traded again, at the same price as its direct competitor.

NVIDIA quickly realized that it would need a new card to counter AMD's coming Radeon HD 4890. AMD looked to target the performance space between GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 285 so NVIDIA presented a design proposal to partners, GeForce GTX 275. There won't be any reference cards of GTX 275 as far as we've been told, but instead graphics card manufacturers get to license the chip and make their own GeForce GTX 275 cards.

Google Launches Free, Legal Music

Google on Monday launched free downloads of licensed songs in China, while sharing advertising revenue with major music labels in a market rife with online piracy.

Lee Kai-Fu, president of Google in greater China, said one reason Google lagged in the mainland search market was because it did not offer music downloads, the missing piece to its strategy in a market where it trails leader Baidu.com.

"We are offering free, high quality and legal downloads," Lee told reporters. "We were missing one piece ... we didn't have music."

The service offers downloads of some 350,000 songs — from Chinese and foreign artists — a number that will rise to 1.1 million in the coming months, said Gary Chen, chief executive of Google's partner www.Top100.cn, a Chinese music website co-founded by basketball star Yao Ming.

Music from artists signed by Sony Music, Warner Music, EMI and Universal Music will be available on the service, which Google has no current plans to expand beyond China, said Lee.

"This is the first serious attempt to start (monetizing) the online market in China. I can't overestimate how important this is," said Lachie Rutherford, president of Warner Music Asia Pacific and Asia chairman of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

Users will be able to search by musical measurements such as the level of "beat" in a song and "instrumentality," as well as by artist and song name.

Microsoft to shut Encarta

Microsoft Corp. has, on Tuesday, announced its plans to shut its online encyclopedia, Encarta, the largest competitor of the communally-crafted free Internet online encyclopedia Wikipedia. The software giant's online encyclopedia would be closed on October 31. Microsoft will stop selling the software products by June this year. One exception is the Encarta Japan Web site, which will stay live until the last day of this year.

People who have paid for a subscription to MSN Encarta Premium, which offers them access to more information, will get a refund for fees paid beyond April 30, although they'll continue to be able to access the site until it shuts down in October. Microsoft will continue to offer technical support for the software products for three years. The software giant has discontinued a couple of other products recently. Late last year it announced it would stop selling OneCare, its consumer antivirus product. It also killed off a mobile browser research product last year.

In a message posted on the MSN Encarta Web site, Microsoft says, "Encarta has been a popular product around the world for many years. However, the category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past."

Online, Microsoft offered a limited selection of professionally edited content for free and a larger selection for a subscription. But the offerings paled when compared to those at sites that could use the work of thousands of contributors. Wikipedia, for instance, offers 2.7 million articles in English. Google's Knol, which like Wikipedia depends on user-generated content, has more than 100,000. Encarta has 42,000 entries. Encarta did try to adapt, inviting users to submit suggestions for changes to articles, but those suggestions first had to be checked by a member of the Encarta staff. And Encarta did not allow users to submit new entries.

Yet Encarta itself began to lose ground among users with the rise of Internet search engines like Google that became capable of quickly connecting users to a seemingly infinite array of free online information resources. Among those resources is Wikipedia, a repository of more than 10 million reference articles produced by volunteers in over 260 languages, including more than 75,000 active contributors.

A spokesman for Microsoft declined to comment on whether Wikipedia contributed to Microsoft's decision to shut down Encarta. The spokesman said the move was "one piece of a broader strategy to continue to evolve our product offerings to address the next wave of people's search and research needs."

Gmail Email Now Available In Most Indian

For those of you who prefer to communicate in Hindi but did not have an easy way to type and send e-mail in your language of choice, Gmail has something to offer you. Google has launched a new feature in Gmail that makes it easy to type e-mail in Indian languages.

When you compose a new mail in Gmail, you should now see an icon with an Indian character. This feature is enabled by default for Gmail users in India. If you do not see this function enabled by default, you will need to go the "Settings" page and enable this option in the "Language" section.

Once you click the Indian languages icon, you can type words the way they sound in English and Gmail will automatically convert the word to its Indian local language equivalent. For example, if a Hindi speaker types "namaste", it will get transliterated to its phonetically equivalent Hindi text.

Gmail currently supports five Indian languages -- Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. So you can select the language of your choice from the drop-down list next to the icon.

According to Chandramouli Mahadevan, software engineer, Google, "We built this new feature using Google's transliteration technology, which is also available on Google India Labs, Orkut, Blogger and iGoogle. I hope you find this feature useful to communicate with those of your friends and family who prefer to write in their native language, and it will be available soon to businesses and schools using Google Apps. Now back to replying to all those Hindi e-mails I got from my family and friends today!"

Google's Gmail service will celebrate its fifth birthday tomorrow. Gmail, known as Google Mail in Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom, was made available to the public by Google on 1 April 2004, after extensive rumours of its existence during testing. Five years after its launch, Gmail now offers over 7GB of storage but is still labelled as a beta version.

The electric grid is the largest and most complex machine in the world and in places it is now critically overburdened. Impacts of climate change, available technology, and the current economic crisis represent the final tipping point for a much needed overhaul. The Smart Grid Maturity Model will serve as a strategic framework for utilities, vendors, regulators, and consumers that have a role in smart grid transformation -- from technological to regulatory to organizational.
